Bowmore
Bowmore Distillery, founded in 1779, holds the distinction of being the oldest licensed distillery on Islay and one of the oldest in Scotland. Located on the shores of Loch Indaal, Bowmore has played a significant role in shaping the island's whisky-making heritage.
In 1837, the distillery was acquired by William and James Mutter, who expanded operations and introduced innovative techniques. Under their stewardship, Bowmore gained recognition for its quality whiskies. The distillery faced challenges during World War II when it ceased production and served as an RAF Coastal Command base.
Post-war, Bowmore resumed operations and entered a period of growth. In 1963, Stanley P. Morrison purchased the distillery, ushering in a new era of modernization while preserving traditional methods. The introduction of the legendary Black Bowmore in 1993 cemented the distillery's reputation for producing exceptional single malts.
Today, Bowmore continues to innovate while honoring its rich history. The distillery's unique microclimate, traditional floor maltings, and use of peat from Islay's moors contribute to its distinctive character. Bowmore's commitment to quality and tradition has earned it numerous accolades and a loyal following among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
The distillery's time-honored production methods, combined with its unique location, contribute to the distinctive character of its spirits. At the heart of Bowmore's whisky-making process are its four copper pot stills, which play a crucial role in shaping the flavor profile of their renowned Islay malts.
